SAT 11 june 2016 • MAD DOG: THE ELIZABETHAN LUTE
Hopkinson Smith (SUI) • Renaissance lute
Genre: classical • Estimated duration 1h 40 min with interval • Numbered seats
Born in 1946, New York, Hopkinson Smith has been regarded as the most moving of present day lutenists. His approach to the lute’s universe embodies a musicality which goes far beyond the seemingly limited voice of his instrument.
Hopkinson graduated from Harvard with Honors in music in 1972. The following year he moved to Europe to study lute and vihuela with world renowned Spanish classical guitarist Emilio Pujol. With his recitals and series of over 20 solo recordings, he continues to rediscover and bring to life works that are among the most expressive and intimate in the entire domain of early music. Internationally recognised as a leading personality in the field of early music and one of the world’s great lutenists, Hopkinson Smith gives concerts and master classes throughout the regions of Eastern and Western Europe, and in North and South America. He currently lives in Basel, Switzerland, where he teaches at the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis.
